STOP PRESS
THE 2010 FORTY CLUB ANNUAL DINNER IS CANCELLED
Despite expectations to the contrary, the Savoy Hotel has just announced that it will not be opening its doors following a 3 year refurbishment programme until the 10th October 2010, just 2 days after the scheduled date of the 2010 Forty Club Annual Dinner.

This is clearly a major blow to the Club: the Club members have only just received a flier about staging the dinner at the Savoy, and so many were looking forward to returning to the Savoy which has been the ‘home’ of the XL Dinner for so many years.

The Club President, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and chairman of the Dinner Committee have been in consultation since the Savoy news was made known to us. It was agreed that any announcements about the intention of the Club must be made sooner rather than later: it was acknowledged that in the past 3 years of staging the dinner at alternative venues, attendance numbers have fallen quite dramatically: there was agreement that another poor performance might jeopardize efforts to stage a really first class event in 2011 for the 75th Anniversary: and there was agreement that a 2010 dinner at another [untested] alternative venue would carry more risks than benefits.

The Forty Club Annual Dinner has been staged year on year for a long time, and the event has enjoyed and continues to enjoy a huge reputation amongst the cricketing community. The ‘run’ of events has never been broken. But the Executive Committee is equally alive to the dwindling attendance numbers, the financial losses, the criticisms levelled at the last 2 dinners in particular, and the economic conditions in the country at large.

It has therefore been decided to cancel the 2010 Dinner.

All our effort will now be focused on organising a first class dinner for the 75th Anniversary. The Patron of the Club has been invited and we hope that as many members as possible will attend.”

Barry Aitken,
Honorary General Secretary

Triangular Tournament 2010
As you should know, Dick Ellis has taken over the running of the Triangular Tournament for the XL Club from Ron Hart and is now seeking names for the squad for this year's tournament.

The 2010 tournament is to be held in Deventer, Holland, between Tuesday 20th and Thursday 22nd July when our hosts will be the SGS and Salland CCs.

Travel Plans - an update
The intention was to have travelled to Holland on Sunday 18th July (via an early flight from Gatwick to Schipol) and then transfer by coach to Deventer. However, the cost of a coach has proved prohibitive. It is recommended that players make their own way to Holland by car via one of the cross-Channel carriers. Some have already made their bookings. For anyone still wishing to fly then they will need to take the train from Amsterdam to Deventer once in Holland.

Friendly/warm up matches: two warm up matches have been arranged for Sunday 18th July vs Salland CC and for Monday 19th July vs Hengelo CC

Accomodation: we have a number of rooms reserved at the Mercure Hotel where the XL Club have stayed on previous visits to Deventer. Rooms have been booked Sunday to Friday. Anyone wishing to arrive on the Saturday should contact Dick Ellis asap.

A number of members have already been in contact with Dick but he needs to know have confirmation of players who are interested in attending the tournament.

To secure a place Dick asks that you to forward to him asap a £50 deposit per person with the cheque made payable to 'The Forty Club'. Please feel free to give him a call on 01474 822235 if you need any further info at this early stage. See 'Officers' page for address details.
