XL elected to bat and made a positive start in racing to 78 for no wicket after just 16 overs with Lloyd Richardson making a classy 55. A flurry of wickets then fell as XL slumped to 120 for 5, which should have been 6 down if two fielders had not collided in taking the simplest of chances! For the second year running XL were indebted to Iraq Thomas, this time for a belligerent 92 with seven sixes, who rescued their innings. Also for the second year running the school managed the situation and did not allow their heads to drop. XL made a generous declaration, allowing the school to have what turned out to be a theoretical 46 overs to get a target that had taken XL 42 overs to compile. For the school Sam Williams with 3 for 55 and James Halywell with 3 for 40 were the pick of the bowlers.
The school also started well and skipper Sam Williams, grandson of XL stalwart John Williams, played a magnificent innings in front of his father and grandparents. With only meaningful support from Jenson Welch (43) and with wickets falling at the other end, Williams hit the ball all around the wicket in a fluent manner against a varied XL attack of spin, pace and swing. He guided the school to just 18 wanted from the last four of the twenty overs before he was excellently caught, low down at cover, to be last man out for 117. Sam Evans with 4 for 31 and Iraq Thomas with 4 for 30 were the pick of the XL bowlers.
A thoroughly enjoyable game played in a competitive spirit and helped by some clever captaincy from XL skipper Steve Baker. He set a gettable target, kept bowlers on who made sure the school were up with the clock and then brought back his two best bowlers for the deciding last few overs.
A special mention should be made of the all round hospitality of Colston’s and the excellent food at lunch and tea. XL cricket at its best.
