On a bright sunny morning, on a pitch still quite wet from the weekend’s deluge, XL lost the toss and were invited to bat first by Gypsies. The pitch proved every bit as difficult as expected, making it hard going to score runs. Added to this when the field was pierced the wet out field slowed the ball very quickly. XL openers, made a slow start, 31 runs in 13 overs when the 1st wicket fell. Staunch XL batting saw them reach the luncheon interval with a respectable 104/2 in 32 overs.
With the warm sun drying the wicket through the morning, XL found the batting a touch easier and during the next session scored steadily, L. Baker (42), T Billing (45) and K Sakamori (25) steered XL towards 200, a swashbuckling innings by A. Stansfield (25) enabled XL to make a declaration 225/7.
Gypsies openers batted cautiously reaching the tea interval.
Kayles played fluently after tea, scoring freely making his half century out of a total of 69/3. XL stayed in the game with some fine off spin bowling from S. Gunaratne, two catches being dropped before he had Kayles caught at long on, for a fine 73.
Courtiour (31) and B. Shadbolt (25) maintained the Gypsies momentum and reached the last hour needing 97 off 20 overs with 6 wickets standing. Gunaratne had Courtiour caught and this slowed the run rate. Rebera bowled Shadbolt, slowing the run rate further. Gypsies showed signs of nerves, Deakin (12) was run out by Josh Smith with an excellent throw from the boundry, Tait (13) was caught by Hayes off Gunaratne, Gypsies still required 41 off 8 overs. Josh Smith came on to bowl and had Pennington LBW with his first ball, Gypsies now 188/9, the last pair batted with determination for the remaining 5 overs, reaching close of play at 191/9.
All in all it proved to be a fine day’s cricket, with both side being in a possible winning position with 10 overs remaining. M. Keyles batted particularly well for Gypsies and some fine bowling from Sam Gunaratne for XL.
