Match Report

XL won the toss and elected to bat, this is the first time that the match has been able to be played at the school for some years due to building work. In addition the XL club also had a match against Chigwell on the same date meaning a shortage of players that was covered by late recruitment of some old boys from the school and an Aussie Montgomerie. The MM’s son was captain of the school. The school has struggled this season to play much cricket due to the exam pressures and early season wet weather, and had only one year 13 boy in the side, the Captain.  XL club were therefore expecting a placid bowling attack and were taken by surprise by a hostile opening spell from 14 year old Bliss who ripped through the top order, ably supported by the tight controlled left arm spin of Everitt aged 15, both of whom play for the local Hornsey Club in the Middlesex league. XL was reduced to 25-5 before Montgomerie ably assisted by Friend rallied the club to a total of 167-6 declared.  The school who we had been advised were four balls away from being all out for 20 odd then put on 106 for the first wicket with another promising youngster 15 year old Miller and Bliss. Sadly the trusted lob bowling of Macdonald Barker which had been the undoing of so many schoolboys before did not click on this occasion and was mercilessly put away by the swift foot movement of the openers. Fawden came on to try and put a brake on the run chase and although was able to break the opening partnership and pick up the scalp of his own son and schools captain , the school held their nerve against some tight bowluing from Acheson to reach their target thanks to some fine strokes from Bliss who ended unbeaten on 89. The match was played in good spirit and the boys were thankful to be able to play for the first time that season on the  newly laid wicket and a declaration time game format which enabled proper bowling and spin options and imaginative field settings. The match manager was delighted to be back with the XL club at the school and it is hoped we can go back to an all day match format next year, when the wicket will have settled down.
