After some concerns about the weather (there had been rain in the area the night before and on the morning) the match started a little later than proposed and reduced to 40 overs. The toss was won by Wales, who fielded.
West Midlands started poorly, losing their first wicket with the score on four, but rallied with a partnership of 63 for the second wicket. This was surpassed by one for the third wicket, though, between Eral Anderson (95*) and Andy Robertson (82), who took the score to 204 before the latter was dismissed. This was the end of the wickets, and the innings closed on 220 for three.
The Welsh bowing honours were shared amongst the team, with Leighton O’Connor (1-22), Lee Parry, Simon Holliday (both 0-24) and Kelvin Bartle (0-27) being the pick.
Facing a good target, Wales started well with a partnership of 67 for the first wicket. That was the end of the wickets here as well, though, with Mark Cox (101*) and Kelvin Bartle (100*) putting on an unbroken stand of 155 for the second wicket. Both batsmen reached their centuries with a six, and it’s possibly the first time that two Welsh batsmen have scored centuries in an IDT match.
The West Midlands bowlers stuck to their task, however, with Sunny D recording figures of 8-3-15-0 at the beginning of the innings. The only West Midlands wicket taker was J Maumdrell, who took a wicket with the first ball of his second over but, whilst fielding a drive from Kelvin Bartle, damaged his hand and had to leave the field.
Thanks should be given to the members of Ombersley CC who hosted the match and made us all very welcome.
