On what looked like a decent track, the School won the toss and the XL Club were asked to bat first. The original feeling that the wicket would play well disappeared very quickly due to the uneven bounce with balls both flying through and keeping low and at lunch the XL Club were in trouble at 65 -5. This changed to 72 – 6 when Bradley who had batted through the morning session was out for 15 hard earned runs bringing Julian Ballinger to the crease at 8 who had made his mind up to go out and play shots from the start and soon passed his 50 with a six over mid-wicket. At the fall of the next wicket John Hawkins made his way to the wicket and put together a partnership of over 50 for the next wicket and with Ballinger realising his chance of a century could disappear he set about the bowling once again reaching his first hundred for over 8 years eventually reaching 115 no before the declaration came at 246 -8.
The captain realising that it could well be Ballinger’s day, decided to open with the slow bowler and was soon rewarded as he cut through the early School batting order taking 4 quick wickets and the school were soon in trouble at 52-5. A change in the bowling continued to bring wickets as slow bowler Paul Massey took an early wicket and continued to tie down the batsman eventually taking 3 – 32 as the school were reduced to 82 – 8 with 20 overs remaining. Batsmen 9 and 10 then set about the bowling and the captain brought back Ballinger to hopefully break the stand and to get his 5th wicket which did not happen as Massey took the next wicket bringing the Schools new Ladies Cricket Coach in at number 11. A last wicket stand of over 40 took us to the 16th over with a draw starting to look like a distinct possibility but a change of ends for John Hawkins brought out a false shot from their last batsman who was stumped with the XL Club winning the match by 69 runs.
