Match Report

A bright sunny afternoon saw Wales XL win the toss and opt to bat. The conditions were in fact a rarity as many of the recent matches against the College had had to be cancelled because of the weather, but not this year!

Despite winning the toss, Wales XL got off to a bad start, losing their first wicket with just 7 on the board. Opener Dewi Davies was caught by his son Tomos for no score … a clear case of “No pocket money for you, my boy!” However, Danny Griffiths (70) and Jon Twigg (44) then put on a partnership of 112 for the second wicket, and although they were both out within ten minutes of each other, Simon Holliday (63) and Gwyn Price (29) added 94 for the fourth wicket. Two more wickets fell before the close of this 35 over match, leaving the Wales XL total at 249 for six wickets. The best bowlers for the College were M Hudson (8-0-31-1)and J Moloney (4-0-23-2).

The College’s reply got off to a good start, with a partnership of 62 for the first wicket between H Aitken (No relation to our esteemed Secretary, I think?) who scored 39 and T Davies (19). Again a couple of wickets fell in quick succession, but that meant that the College captain M Hodson came to the wicket. He dominated a partnership of 142 with J Topping (36) and his innings of 110 saw him score 16 fours and 4 sixes; his total innings took 49 balls and 67 minutes, so he didn’t take much time! After he was out with the score at 213 for three wickets, however, the College team rather lost their way, losing four more wickets for just 18 runs. A further wicket fell with just two runs needed, but I Jones and B Jenkin saw the College home to win by two wickets with two balls to spare. The best bowlers for XL Wales were the captain Mike Turner (8-0-58-5, including 5 for 18 in four overs) and Peter Betteley (7-0-31-2).

Despite the defeat, it was good to be able to play at Llandovery after a gap of several years, and we look forward to next year.
