Mike Davies drives to the boundary

Lucas Farndale plays one to leg

The spirit of cricket is a phrase that can often be misused, but today at Loretto we played in a match that as played in exactly the right spirit. Against a young, enthusiastic and talented school side the club emerged with an honourable draw.

The school batted first and posted an impressive 183-8, Andy MacFarlane bagged three wickets and there were two for Richard Young, two for John Cameron and one for Javaid Ashraf. Javaid who ended up with figures of 1-76 off eleven was let down in the field with four catches going down of his bowling. All in all the club missed six chances, none of them easy but six never the less. However neither the bowlers nor the fielders let that misfortune get them down and it was a very solid blowing and fielding performance.

In reply the club posted 164-8 with Mike Davies scoring a fine 69 and Lucas Farndale 22. Mike and Lucas put on 78 for the third wicket and a win was very much on the cards. However the loss of Davies and Barry was then followed by three wickets falling on 140. That very much derailed the chase. A spirited stand of 24

for the eighth wicket meant going into the last over we needed 24 to pull off an unlikely win.

Not to be the case but a very enjoyable afternoon at Musselburgh never the less.
