Match Report

On 9th June at Whitland CC, Pembrokeshire Youth XI played the Welsh Over 40s XI.

In order to allow everyone a game Pembs Youth were allowed to field 13 players and gave the Wales team one of their wicket keepers.

The Welsh XII were put into bat and Paul and son Tom Mansbridge put on 37 before both fell in quick succession as L Davies and Jonny White took 5 wickets between them.  For the Welsh team wickets fell at regular intervals as 7 players made double figures but none were able to go on. Leighton Walters from Carmarthen Wanderers top scored with 32 (including five 4s and a massive 6), and the Welsh team was bowled out in the 37th over for 162.

As ever the tea at Whitland is worth mentioning – great cakes!  Then the Pembrokeshire Youth team started their chase positively with Archie Thomas hitting three 6s in his 29 before again both openers fell with the scoreboard unmoved, this time on 39. At 115-4, with J Mansbridge (39) and P Mansbridge (13) milking the bowling of T Mansbribridge(!), victory looked assured.

However when Simon Holliday caught and bowled both batsmen on the way to his 5-17 figures, a collapse left the last pair needing 22 off 4 overs.  This was reduced to needing 3 off the last over, then 1 off 3 balls, with Jack Sciven facing, and all 10 fielders in a tight ring.  A drive was blocked, a charge offered a hard stumping chance (to their on loan keeper Mr C Thomas!), which was missed.  The last ball was creamed through cover for 4 and a well worked victory.

The game was much enjoyed by all and the Welsh Over 40s will be looking for revenge next year.
