Southern Hemisphere Owls won by Seven Wickets
Played at Newport CC, NP19 4PT

Match Report

The Southern Hemisphere Owls are a touring team drawn from Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands and England, and are in the UK and the Netherlands for a month. This was the first of three fixtures against the Forty Club, as they play Eastern Counties and Cinque Ports later in the tour.

It’s not often that Newport CC can be said to have tropical weather, but bright sunshine and a pretty high temperature saw the Forty Club Wales win the toss and bat first. Sadly, there wasn’t a good start to go with the good weather, as after just six overs, the score was 17 for two. However, a partnership of 58 between Steve Matthews (27) and debutant Mark Cox made things better until the former was out. The Owls use a rule that a batsman making 50 retires, so Mark Cox did so with his score on 53.  A further partnership took the score to 137 for 5 (6) but wickets fell regularly afterwards, with the innings closing after 40 overs on 152 for 8 (9). The best bowlers were Hamish Wright with 2 – 24 off 8 overs and Stuart Spedding with 2 – 13 off 5 overs.

The Owls got off to a flyer in their reply, with their first 50 coming up after 13 overs. Hugh Wright retired on 51, Stuart Spedding scored 24 and then Phil Harris retired on 50. The target was reached in the 34th over, and the Owls won by nine (seven) wickets. The best bowler was Grahame Cork (1 for 22 off 8 overs), who is a Forty Club member from England who volunteered to play for us when we were reduced to ten men shortly before the start.

Despite the large margin of defeat, it was an excellent match, and we wish the team every success in the rest of the tour.
