Match Report

The Forty Club team turned up for their first new fixture in many years at Wellington College on a dull overcast day and on losing the toss were asked to bat first. Last season’s run machine, Jon Thornton opened with David Steele and the pair put on 71 before they were both dismissed prompting a middle order collapse when we lost 3 quick wickets for only 20 runs. This brought together Andy King and Grant Meadows who started slowly ensuring we lost no more wickets and accelerating in the last few over’s putting on an unbeaten 85 runs with King finishing on 37 and Meadows on 25 in a final total of 176-5.  As is the norm with schools batting second, both openers came out in 20/20 mode and set about the opening bowlers prompting a change after only 7 over’s turning to spin and pace bowler Andy Lilley who was making his XL debut. David Steele got the breakthrough after an opening stand of 81 with 2 quick wickets and this was followed by Lilley’s first wicket removing the other dangerous opening batsman. This prompted a very rare occurrence in the Forty Club as Lilley followed it up by bowling the next 2 batsman taking an excellent hat-trick finishing with 3 for 35 in his first match. Despite a similar mid order collapse to our own this brought to the crease South, batting at 6, who set about the XL attack passing an excellent 50 in an unbeaten innings of 63 and together with Robertson put on 70 for the 6th wicket passing our total with 5 over’s to spare.

We were made to feel very welcome by both the college coaches and umpires and despite the damp conditions the match was played in a friendly and competitive way.  During after-match discussions with the coaches the possibility of playing this match as an all-day fixture next season was considered.
