Match Report

This match began in the Forty Club’s 75th Anniversary Year in 2011, when a trophy was presented to remember the services to Welsh Cricket of two former members, Terry Thomas and Glyn Jones.

Sadly, because of the weather, the match hadn’t been played for three years, and the overall match score was two each. Therefore, there was a lot of keen anticipation before this year’s match which of course we knew we were going to play. On the field, there had been quite a few changes to the original teams, and several new players came into the respective teams.

The match was played at a very brown Gorseinon Cricket Club, and the West team had no hesitation in batting when they won the toss. They did not have the best of starts, though, being reduced to 4 for 2 after just four overs. However, that was as good as it got for the East, as Greg Fisher (155*) and Simon Holliday (99) put on a stand of 193 for the third wicket. That wasn’t the end, though, as more hectic run scoring took the West total to 293 for 4 off their forty overs. The best bowler for the East was Jon Corden, who took 2 – 19.

Faced with such a large total, the East team needed a good start, and whilst the first wicket fell with the score at 20, Scott Matthews (56) and Ali Price (38) took the score to 98 before the former was dismissed. The West’s bowling was by now well on top and the innings closed at 187 all out, giving the West a win by 106 runs. Mention must be made of the contributions by Gareth Palmer (29) and Paul Eedy (24). The West’s best bowlers were Martin Wilkshire (3 – 15), Tom Clarke (2 – 28) and Lee Morgan (2 – 38).

A very good day was brought an end with the presentation of the Terry Thomas / Glyn Jones Trophy to the West’s captain, Simon Holliday. The two teams included several debutants, and efforts will be made to sign them up for the future! The Forty Club are very grateful to the hosts for all their hard work in arranging the match.

Next years’ match will be played in the East … who will be seeking to make it three all!
