vs Garden Old Boys CC [at Western Province Oval].
Are you ready for this? WE WON ! We have just won the first match on this tour! We “won the toss” and batted first, were 3 down for 41 but then put together a stand of 72 for the 4th wicket and then, whilst Jon Thornton held his own at one end, watched wicket after wicket at the other till we finished our 40 overs at 168 for 8.
Actually since the Old Boys bowled so many wides, we effectively enjoyed an extra 7 overs . Still ‘n all, 168 didn’t seem a big total until we went out to field and Phil Deakin, skippering today and opening the bowling took 3 wickets in the first 8 overs and the Old Boys were 25 for 3. Andy Gregory was bowling at the other end: after his first 5 overs he was 0 for 12. After his 6th over he had taken 3 for 12 in a hat-trick!
Deepak Sinha and Martin Southwell then took over the bowling duty and cleaned up the tail, and Old Boys were all out for 88 runs – and we hadn’t even taken drinks!
XL win by 80 runs. 3 wickets each for Phil Deakin, Deepak Sinha, and Andy Gregory and one for Martin Southwell. 51 runs not out for Jon Thornton and 31 for Kyle Bradley.
After the match there was a spirited fines session, presentations and a lovely meal; the Old Boys were in good form and given their hospitality and friendliness they are sure to be on the fixture list for a future XL tour to this part of the world.
